Quick and Easy Mock Garlic Bread Recipe
Oh NO! I forgot to buy the garlic bread!
Have you ever found yourself ready to make an Italian (or American-Italian) dinner, only to realize that you forgot to buy the garlic bread? Fear not! This is the perfect solution to just such an occasion.
What you need:
Dough Ingredients:
- 1 (.25oz) package of active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 Tablespoons olive oil
- 2 1/2 cups bread flour (standard flour will work too)
Sauce Ingredients:
- 4 Tablespoons (or 1/2 stick) butter or margarine ~melted
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (more or less to taste)
Toppings:
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 8 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese
Making the dough:
In a large mixing bowl combine water, sugar, and yeast. Allow to sit for 10 minutes.
While you are getting everything ready, preheat your oven to 450*
Add the flour, oil, and salt. Mix together to form a ball of dough, cover and let sit for 5 minutes.
Roll the dough out onto a cookie sheet or pizza pan using either oil or flour to keep it from sticking to the pan and/or your hands.
The sauce:
While your dough is rising for that 5 minutes, it's time to prepare your sauce. Melt your butter completely then whisk in the garlic powder until well blended. Set aside until your dough has been rolled out onto the pan.
Putting it all together:
With your dough rolled out and looking very much like a homemade pizza at this time, pour the sauce over the dough. Spread it evenly over the entire top of the dough. (A BBQ brush works wonderfully for this.)
Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese, then cover with the mozzarella cheese.
Place it in the oven at 450* for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese begins to turn a nice golden brown.
Remove from the oven and cut into slices. Serve!
